The Issue

For years, our community allotments have been a cherished space where we cultivate not just plants, but friendships and a sense of community. However, the recent changes introduced in the new Allotment Tenancy Agreement have sparked significant concerns among many of us who rely on these plots for sustainable living and community engagement.

I was taken aback when the agreement was presented without any prior consultation or input from the allotment holders themselves.

These allotment sites play a pivotal role in promoting local food production, enhancing biodiversity, and providing a sanctuary for people seeking peace and purpose. The changes in management style and financial oversight not only have a direct impact on the allotment holders but also affect the wider community who benefit from these green spaces.

It would help us to know costs of running the allotments and we could see where we can help reduce those costs, keeping rents affordable.

Additionally, the allotment holders should be actively involved in any decisions affecting the tenancy agreements or changes in policies related to management and finance. By leveraging our collective experiences and insights, we can ensure that the decisions made are in the best interest of both the allotments and the community at large.

I urge the council or governing body responsible for the allotments to:

1. Establish a transparent financial reporting system accessible to all allotment holders.
2. Engage in regular consultations with allotment holders before making significant decisions.
3. Form an allotment advisory committee that includes tenant representatives to oversee management and financial practices.

These steps will ensure accountability, foster trust, and empower allotment holders to continue nurturing these valuable communal resources. Please support this petition to advocate for transparency and inclusivity by signing today.
