The Issue

I will never forget the overwhelming anxiety and heartbreak I felt when I experienced a miscarriage at 11 weeks pregnant. After noticing light bleeding, which later turned into heavier bleeding accompanied by abdominal pain, I rushed to the hospital, hoping for some reassurance or clarity. Instead, I was told that it was "too early" for a scan and was asked to wait for three days. Those days were torturous, filled with uncertainty and fear about the life growing inside me.

Sadly, I am not alone in this experience. Many women across the UK, facing the possibility of miscarriage, are told they must wait days or even longer to receive a scan. This leaves them in a distressing state of limbo, not knowing if their baby is alive or not. When I attended the scheduled scan, my worst fears were confirmed: there was no heartbeat. While the loss was deeply personal, the system's response was entirely impersonal.

The NHS is there to support us in our time of need, but the current policy regarding scans falls short for expectant mothers who show early signs of miscarriage. Denying timely scans to those in distress not only exacerbates their pain but also fails to provide the essential medical care and emotional support they deserve.

We propose an actionable solution: amend NHS guidelines to ensure that any pregnant woman experiencing symptoms indicative of a potential miscarriage before 16 weeks is prioritized for a scan within 24 hours. This approach ensures that women receive the urgent care they need and deserve, reducing the mental anguish of waiting in uncertainty.

Statistics show that early intervention during pregnancy can significantly impact mental health and future pregnancy outcomes. According to a study by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), early pregnancy assessments significantly reduce anxiety and enable quicker medical intervention.

It is time for change. We urge the NHS and policymakers to listen to the voices of countless women and rectify this gap in healthcare services. Ensuring that timely scans are available can prevent unnecessary emotional suffering and provide vital medical insights at a critical time.

Please sign this petition to help ensure that no woman will have to face prolonged uncertainty and anxiety about the health of her pregnancy. Together, we can advocate for an NHS that truly supports and cares for all expectant mothers.
