
This case has raised many practitioners to show their concern around the globe. We already know that practitioners who raise concerns about patient safety are at higher risk of disciplinary and being referred to the NMC so will this latest example just make practitioners less likely to be honest when mistakes are made.
The NMC has released new guidance on Duty of Candour but how can nurses and midwives honestly and openly speak up accurately and truthfully if they face potential imprisonment, loss of career and livelihood to name a few.
This is by no means to lessen the seriousness of these events on patients and their loved ones but in order to learn and move forward in a positive way to ensure simliar issues aren't repeated criminalising the person is not the answer.
