The Issue

Growing up as a transgender teenager in the UK (female to male), I am constantly plagued by fear and anxiety. Simple tasks like going to school feel daunting, and the shadow of transphobia looms over my daily life. I have been the target of hateful slurs, bullying, and discrimination, and have even experienced bias from teachers meant to support and nurture my growth. This is not how life should be for anyone, much less during formative years.

Transgender individuals, especially children, are increasingly vulnerable to hate crimes in the UK. According to a report by Stonewall, anti-LGBTQ+ hate crimes have increased by 144% over the past five years. Such hostile environments foster fear and insecurity among transgender people, deterring them from living their authentic lives.

The UK government and law have failed to identify hate crimes in cases, such as the Murder Of Brianna Ghey in 2023 and the hate speech online following up from that where people have been threatened and told to end their lives for being transgender. This disappointed me when it happened, and most likely disappointed other trans people as they had their trust in the law to identify and properly record hate crimes. Failure to identify and record hate crimes can create a "justice gap" that significantly undermines the effectiveness and development of legislation.

The UK government must act decisively to safeguard the rights and safety of all transgender people, including trans children. Legislation should be enacted to strengthen punishments for hate crimes and to offer better protection for those who are transgender. Educational institutions should also play a crucial role by fostering inclusivity and awareness from a young age.

We urge the authorities to implement comprehensive policies ensuring that schools are safe havens for all children, regardless of their gender identity. Providing mandatory training for teachers on LGBTQ+ issues and establishing a zero-tolerance policy on transphobia within schools are vital steps.

Moreover, the government should fund community programs dedicated to supporting transgender individuals, raising awareness, and encouraging acceptance. By addressing both societal attitudes and the legal framework, we can work towards a future where transgender people are free from fear and prejudice in the UK.

Help us build a safer, more inclusive society for transgender individuals. Please sign this petition to show your support and demand protection and equality for all transgender people in the UK.
