Ensure safe routes to Westwood Elementary School

The Issue

This petition has started due to two worried mothers, and we hope to establish the community's support in this matter.

In the winter of 2024, my son encountered a terrifying ordeal that no parent wants to face. While on his way to Westwood Elementary School, he slipped on ice formed by water leakage near West Sunset Ave. The existing sandbag setup, intended to mitigate the problem, failed significantly-it neither contained the water nor prevented subsequent hazards. Worse yet, these sandbags have often drifted into the road, creating additional driving challenges for residents.

This issue goes beyond my household. One fellow resident shared their anxiety after her son, who usually bikes home from school, was delayed. A stranger had to escort him home by car after he fell due to the loose gravel. Such scenarios are a mother's nightmare and vividly illustrate the need for change.

The ongoing construction on West Sunset Ave, South King St, and South Monticello Dr has turned daily routes into danger zones for our children attending Westwood Elementary School. Despite understanding the necessity of the construction work, the safety of our young ones should never be compromised.

The gravel scattered across the paths and persistent water leaks are causing injuries and creating unsafe travel conditions. It is imperative that corrective measures are implemented soon, especially before the harsh winter months, which could exacerbate the situation with ice and hazardous road conditions.

We, the concerned residents of Stillwater, Oklahoma, urge the city officials to prioritize the safety of our children by enforcing stricter safety regulations around the construction sites. This includes properly securing construction materials, ensuring clear and safe pathways for walking and biking, and resolving the water leakage issues immediately.

Immediate measures such as effective drainage solutions, better sandbag positioning, and more vigilant monitoring of the construction areas could drastically improve the current situation and prevent potential accidents.

We call upon the Stillwater City Council to act swiftly in addressing these hazardous conditions. Our children deserve a safe journey to school. Please sign this petition to ensure their safety and well-being.
