Ensure safe housing for survivors of domestic violence in Oxfordshire
Ensure safe housing for survivors of domestic violence in Oxfordshire
The Issue
Two years ago, I found myself in a nightmare I never imagined—trapped in an abusive relationship, fearing for my safety and my children’s future. After gathering the courage to escape, the most daunting challenge wasn't leaving but finding a safe place where my family could start anew. The alarming reality I discovered is the significant lack of safe housing for survivors of domestic violence in Oxfordshire.
Thousands of individuals in Oxfordshire face domestic abuse, with many unable to secure safe housing due to scarce resources and overwhelming demand. Domestic abuse is a leading cause of homelessness among women nationwide, but in Oxfordshire, resources are even more constrained. Recent studies have shown that domestic violence cases in the region are on the rise, while funding for shelters and transitional housing is far below what is needed to meet the demand.
Government support and funding must be increased to ensure survivors can access immediate, safe accommodations and comprehensive support services. We urge Oxfordshire County Council to take action by allocating more funds to domestic violence shelters and transitional housing projects. Additionally, we should implement programs that provide educational and employment opportunities for survivors, focusing on helping them regain independence and rebuild their lives.
Together with local charities and organisations, we can develop a holistic approach to addressing domestic violence, ensuring survivors have the resources they need to escape abusive environments permanently. This includes increasing awareness and providing training to law enforcement and social service professionals about the complexities of domestic abuse.
By signing this petition, you're standing with survivors and demanding that Oxfordshire County Council take immediate and decisive actions to address the desperate need for safe housing and support services for victims of domestic violence. Your support can make a significant difference in creating a safer, more supportive environment for individuals escaping abuse. Please sign and share this petition with your community today.
