The Issue

We call on World Curling and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to reform the Olympic curling qualification system so that at least one team from each major region is guaranteed a place in the men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles events at future Winter Olympics.

Why this matters:

Right now, Olympic curling fields are limited to 10 teams per event and heavily favour a small group of traditional curling nations. As a result, large parts of the world — including most of Asia beyond a few established countries, Africa, South America, the Middle East, and many Pacific nations — have almost no realistic path to Olympic participation.

This lack of regional representation:

•  Limits the global growth of curling

•  Discourages investment in emerging nations

•  Goes against the Olympic values of universality and inclusion

Our proposal:

Introduce a system that guarantees at least one qualification place per region (or a comparable continental quota) while still protecting competitive standards. This could be done through reserved regional spots or an expanded Olympic Qualification pathway.

This change would:

•  Give developing curling nations a clear and motivating goal

•  Broaden the sport’s worldwide appeal

•  Make the Olympic curling competition more truly international

We urge World Curling and the IOC to adopt this principle for the 2030 and 2034 Olympic Winter Games qualification systems.
