For the past 7 years, only two sports days at Dreghorn Primary School have allowed parents to attend. It’s frustrating to see a cherished event from my childhood now being sidelined. I still remember the excitement of having my family cheer me on from the sidelines, and it’s disheartening that my own children and fellow parents at Dreghorn are being deprived of this experience. Sports day isn’t just about the races; it’s an opportunity to build school spirit, foster community bonding, and create lifelong memories.

Unfortunately, Dreghorn Primary School often cancels outdoor sports day events due to the unpredictability of Scottish weather. Instead, they are hastily moved indoors, barring parents from attending because of space constraints. While safety is paramount, many schools in similar climates have found creative solutions to this conundrum. Schools could consider rescheduling when the weather is unfavorable or moving the event to an outdoor venue with shelter options.

The absence of parents at these events impacts not just the children, but the community as a whole.
