New Zealand has always prided itself on being a progressive and inclusive nation. However, the current draft framework for Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) guidelines do not fully reflect our commitment to inclusivity unless they encompass all members of our diverse society, particularly the LGBTQ+ community.

Access to comprehensive and inclusive sexuality education is not just a matter of human rights; it’s a vital step towards reducing discrimination and promoting a more equitable community. Currently, the lack of representation and information in the RSE draft framework will leave many LGBTQ+ students without the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their health and relationships.

Incorporating LGBTQ+ content into RSE curriculum would ensure that all students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, receive the information and support they need. This includes understanding LGBTQ+ terms and identities, relationships, and health and safety issues. It helps to foster an environment of acceptance and understanding, combating prejudice and misinformation in our schools.

This is an urgent call to the Ministry of Education in New Zealand to revise and update the current RSE draft framework to include LGBTQ+ content comprehensively. By doing so, we not only affirm our commitment to equality and diversity but also equip the next generation with the knowledge and empathy necessary to sustain these values.
