Ensure Immediate Access to Insulin for Kejriwal and Protect His Basic Medical Rights!

The Issue

Who is Arvind Kejriwal ?

Arvind Kejriwal, an Indian politician and graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, has been serving as the Chief Minister of Delhi since February 2015. He leads the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which emphasizes anti-corruption measures and governance focused on the welfare of the people. Kejriwal's journey into politics followed a career in the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), where he served as a civil servant. His prominence soared during the 2011 anti-corruption movement led by social activist Anna Hazare, advocating for the Jan Lokpal Bill to combat corruption in India.

In 2012, Kejriwal founded the Aam Aadmi Party, aiming to challenge the established political order and provide a platform for ordinary citizens to engage in politics. The party made significant electoral gains in the 2013 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections, forming the government with support from the Indian National Congress. However, his first stint as Chief Minister lasted only 49 days, marred by political discord that led to his resignation. Despite this setback, AAP's popularity surged, leading to a resounding victory in the 2015 elections, with the party winning 67 out of 70 seats again in 2020 62 out of 70 in the Delhi Legislative Assembly.

Since then, Kejriwal's government has focused on various issues, including education, healthcare, and public services, implementing populist policies and innovative governance initiatives. His tenure has been characterized by a continued emphasis on anti-corruption measures and pro-people governance, solidifying his status as a prominent figure in Indian politics.

The Delhi Chief Minister was arrested by the enforcement directorate on March 21 in a money laundering case linked to the now scrapped Delhi excise policy case. He remains in judicial custody.

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the health and well-being of Arvind Kejriwal, who has been battling diabetes for the past 30 years. Despite his critical medical condition requiring 54 units of insulin daily, we have received alarming reports that his insulin has been withheld while in custody. As a result, his blood sugar levels have soared to a dangerous level of 300, posing an immediate threat to his health and life.

The denial of basic medical rights by jail authorities is a grave violation of human rights and cannot be tolerated. Arvind Ji's fundamental right to access essential medical treatment, including insulin, must be upheld without any delay.

We urge the authorities to take immediate action to ensure the following:

Immediate Access to Insulin: Arvind Ji must be provided with the necessary insulin medication without any further delay to stabilize his blood sugar levels and prevent further complications.

Medical Evaluation and Treatment: Arvind Ji's health condition must be evaluated by qualified medical professionals, and appropriate medical treatment must be provided to address his diabetes and any related health issues.

Respect for Human Rights: It is imperative that the rights and dignity of all individuals, including those in custody, are respected and protected. Denying access to essential medical care is a violation of human rights and must be rectified immediately.

Accountability and Justice: Those responsible for withholding Arvind Ji's insulin and endangering his health must be held accountable for their actions. Justice must be served to ensure that such violations do not occur in the future.

We call upon the concerned authorities, including jail authorities and government officials, to prioritize Arvind Ji's health and well-being by taking immediate action to provide him with the necessary medical treatment and ensure that his basic human rights are respected and upheld.
