Ensure Free Credit Monitoring for All Canadians

The Issue

My identity was compromised, and before I knew it, credit alerts notified me of suspicious activities. Someone had applied for credit under my name. In response, I contacted Equifax and TransUnion, placing a fraud alert on my account and registering the issue with the CRA. To my dismay, despite my efforts, fraudulent credit applications continued, affecting my credit score. Even when soft inquiries were performed, credit was granted! Frustratingly, when I sought help from the RCMP, I was told their capacities were limited, especially given that, in the grand scheme, the fraud was considered minor.

This is not just my story; this could be anyone in Canada. We have witnessed a series of serious privacy breaches across the nation affecting major institutions like Life Labs, CRA, Equifax, Desjardins, and Yves Rocher, among others. These breaches have compromised our personal information including dates of birth, addresses, emails, names, and telephone numbers. As a result, our identities are at risk, and the subsequent credit fraud impacts lives profoundly.

The current mechanisms to protect oneself after fraud occurs are woefully inadequate. Credit-granting processes heavily rely on basic personal information, and the shift online has not been matched with robust security measures. The system places the burden of recovery on the victims, rather than proactively preventing fraud.

The need of the hour is a comprehensive, government-mandated free credit monitoring service for every Canadian. Free credit monitoring would provide early detection of unauthorized activities on one's credit profile, thus preventing financial harm before it takes place. When suspicious activities are flagged, individuals can take immediate actions rather than reacting after the damage is done.

Other countries have implemented measures to provide citizens with free credit monitoring in the wake of data breaches. Canada must follow suit to ensure the safety and security of its people.

Join me in urging the Canadian government to take decisive action to implement free credit monitoring services for all its citizens. It's time to prioritize the security of our personal information and safeguard our financial futures. Sign this petition to demand change and make a strong statement that Canadians deserve better protection against identity theft and credit fraud.
