Petition Summary: Fair Treatment for Uber/Lyft Drivers.

We, the undersigned, urge Premier Doug Ford, Mayor Patrick Brown, Mayor Olivia Chow, city of Toronto, Peel region, City of Brampton, York region, Members of parliament canada, Legislative assembly of Ontario to take immediate action to protect Uber drivers in Ontario. Uber’s current system is unfair, unsafe, and leaves drivers without proper rights or protection.

1. Misleading Minimum Guarantee

Uber promotes a “minimum guarantee” to attract drivers, but in reality, it does not reflect true earnings. Despite long hours on the road, drivers often receive far less than expected, as Uber takes close to 50% of each fare. The promise of stable and fair pay is misleading, leaving drivers struggling financially.

2. Unfair & Inconsistent Fare Calculations

Uber’s fare system lacks transparency and fairness. For example:

A 42.34 km trip, 30 minutes pays just $22.83.

Another 25 km trip, 30 minutes pays $20.00.

Short trips, such as 2 km over 10–12 minutes, now pay as little as $3.00, which is well below minimum wage after fuel, insurance, and maintenance costs.

Long-Distance Trips with No Return Guarantee

For long trips, such as 100 km rides that pay only around $50, drivers face additional risk. After completing the trip, there is no guarantee of receiving a return fare back to the city or town, leaving drivers stranded, unpaid for the return journey, and forced to cover fuel and time out of their own pocket

In busy areas like Rogers Stadium, Uber offers 40-minute trips (including pickup) for only $9.44.

This proves that fares are not calculated in proportion to time, distance, or effort, leaving drivers with unstable and unfair incomes.

3. Unsafe Trip Radar System

Uber’s “Trip Radar” feature creates dangerous conditions on the road. Drivers are given only 5 seconds to accept trips, forcing them to look at their phones while driving. Even after accepting, many trips are reassigned to “another driver,” wasting time and creating false hope. This system is both unsafe and inefficient, putting drivers, passengers, and the public at risk.

4. Lack of Driver Voice & Job Security

Uber drivers can lose their accounts permanently based on a single unverified rider complaint. There is no fair investigation or appeal process, meaning drivers can lose their only source of income overnight. This creates financial hardship, family stress, and severe mental pressure. Without proper protections, drivers are treated as disposable, with no chance to defend themselves.

Our Request

We call on the Ontario government and City of Toronto to:

3. Introduce a fair appeals process for drivers facing deactivation.
4. Protect the rights and dignity of drivers who provide essential transportation services across the city.

This is not only about wages — it is about safety, justice, and respect for thousands of drivers whose families depend on this work. Without fair regulation, Uber will continue to exploit drivers, harm communities, and put public safety at risk.
