Ensure fair pay and better support for unpaid carers
The Issue
Caring for my elderly father living with dementia is a challenging and deeply rewarding experience. Each day presents new hurdles, from managing his medications to ensuring his emotional well-being, all while balancing my own mental and physical health. Unfortunately, despite the invaluable contributions that carers make to families and society, there is a significant lack of recognition and fair compensation for our efforts.
Unpaid carers like myself provide essential support that often goes unnoticed. We give countless hours and sacrifice personal goals to ensure that our loved ones receive the care and dignity they deserve. In the UK, it is estimated that unpaid carers save the economy £132 billion annually, according to Carers UK. Yet, despite economic contributions, unpaid carers often receive little more than a token acknowledgment for their dedication and hard work.
A realistic and just solution would be to increase Carers Allowance to reflect not only the hours of work provided but also the complexity and emotional labour involved. Furthermore, implementing structured support systems such as respite care and counseling services can ease the burden on carers, allowing us to continue our roles without compromising our well-being.
We urge the UK government and policymakers to take immediate action to ensure that unpaid carers are recognised and fairly compensated. This can be achieved by conducting a nationwide review of current carers’ allowances and establishing a clear framework that includes regular pay adjustments in line with inflation and the cost of living.
By signing this petition, you are supporting the movement towards fair pay and recognition for unpaid carers, acknowledging the critical work that we do every day. Together, we can drive change that honours the dedication of carers across the nation and ensures that our contribution to society is valued and respected. Please sign this petition to make a difference in the lives of unpaid carers and those we care for.
