Ensure equal opportunities in UK theatre for all young performers
The Issue
Talent has no height limit — and it should have no postcode. Yet, in the UK theatre industry, young performers face limitations that unfairly restrict their dreams. As someone who runs a dance and music academy for children, I have witnessed first-hand how passionate and talented individuals can be blocked out of opportunities simply because they do not fit a narrow physical stereotype.
Our stages, covering theatrical productions from plays to musical theatre and ballet, should reflect the diversity of talent available across the country that don’t discriminate due to a Childs’ size, height, or location. Children who grow taller than five feet or develop earlier than their peers often find themselves excluded from roles that define childhood based on arbitrary visual characteristics. Yet, they deserve just as much of a chance to shine. It would be nice to see children of all stages of development on stage, representing everyday children. Performers that children of all ages and heights in the audience can relate to.
Evidence suggests that registering in the arts has numerous benefits for young people, from boosting self-esteem to enhancing academic performance (Creative Industries Federation). Theatre, in particular, provides an invaluable developmental space that should remain accessible to any child striving for it, regardless of whether or not they fit an industry-standard mould.
We propose that the UK theatre industry adopts more inclusive casting policies that account for young performers' natural growth realities. By expanding the range of accepted physical characteristics and de-centring the focus on geographic proximity to major theatre hubs, we could create an industry where every child can envision themselves on stage.
Sign this petition to urge the UK theatre industry to redefine its standards, broaden its mindset, and allow every young performer to chase their dreams without limits imposed by height or location. Together, let's champion a more inclusive future for theatre, where all young talents have equal opportunities to shine on stage.
