Ensure Central Kingston has a community recreation centre
Ensure Central Kingston has a community recreation centre
The Issue
The YMCA and City of Kingston have announced a partnership on a new pool and recreation space located at the Invista Centre in the west end.
What hasn't been disclosed is the future of the YMCA space on Wright Cres.
We, the undersigned, are urging both the city of Kingston and the YMCA of Eastern Ontario to ensure that access to recreation facilities similar to those that currently exist in central Kingston are not affected by this new development.
The current location at Wright Crescent is walkable, located next to a public transit hub, is adjacent to a high school and numerous elementary schools walk to this location for programming. Located so close to many high rise apartment buildings means that residents without as much recreation space can easily access it at this location.
With Kingston's population growth projections, we need more recreation facilities close to where people live. We need uninterrupted recreation facilities to ensure that residents have a place to go for fitness and social connection. We need affordable recreation programming for children that is close to where they live and go to school.
We do not want our centre of community moved to another part of the city.
