The Issue

This petition stems from a deeply personal experience. My grandmother left me her house, and some family members are not happy about it. They have the financial means to hire lawyers; I do not. It's an unfair battle that has led me to represent myself in court - a daunting task when you don't understand the law.

In Washington State, and indeed across America, many people find themselves in similar situations every day. The American Bar Association reports that at least 80% of low-income individuals can't afford legal representation or access legal aid for civil cases (ABA, 2020). This often leads to them representing themselves (pro se) and facing an uphill battle against well-represented opponents.

Probate cases like mine are particularly challenging due to their complexity and emotional toll. Yet there is no provision for free or affordable legal help in these instances.

This situation is unjust and needs immediate attention. We call on lawmakers in Washington State to enact legislation ensuring free or affordable legal representation for all citizens involved in civil cases, especially probate matters. Everyone deserves equal access to justice regardless of their economic status.

Please sign this petition if you believe that everyone should have fair representation under the law!
