Update 5/20/25:
Enough Secrecy: Save the Old Town Orono YMCA
On 5-7-25, the board and leadership of the Old Town Orono YMCA cut the gymnastics team with no warning. The gymnastics program has a 50-year legacy with one of the best gyms in Maine.
A few days later, the YMCA announced that the recreational gymnastics program and cheerleading would be relocated to the turf field, leaving our beloved gym empty. No more toddlers learning their first somersault, no more gymnasts facing their fears on the beam, no more cheerleaders perfecting their stunts.
These decisions, which have a direct impact on all members of this community, have excluded the public. The gymnastics team is struggling to get information about why and how the decision to cut the team was made.
Decisions being made at this YMCA are short-sighted and were made with insufficient reasoning, community involvement, or care for the children who will be most directly impacted.
Since 2023, the OTO YMCA has cut its rock climbing program, its gear library, closed its satellite campus, the Piscataquis YMCA, and more.
We urge everyone to sign this petition. This started as a fight to save the gymnastics program, but it has become something bigger than that — a fight to protect our YMCA.

5/8/25
Just yesterday, the board of the Old Town Orono YMCA suddenly decided to cut the gymnastics team without any warning. This move has shattered the deeply-rooted bonds among the athletes who have dedicated years to perfecting their craft. With no other local gyms available, these athletes are left without a place to pursue the sport they love.
Gymnastics is more than just a sport; it instills discipline, teamwork, and resilience. These values are critical for the development of young athletes, and removing access to this sport could cause these girls to miss out on important character-building opportunities.
We urge the Old Town Orono YMCA board to reconsider this decision and reinstate the gymnastics team. By doing so, you preserve not only the hope and dreams of these athletes but also the essence of community and support that the team embodies.
Sign this petition to show your support for the reinstatement of the Old Town Orono YMCA gymnastics team, and to help these athletes continue to partake in the sport they are passionate about. Together, we can advocate for positive change and ensure the future of gymnastics in our community.
