Cancel Enniscrone Pig Race at the Black Pig Festival

0 have signed. Let’s get to 2,500!

The committee didn't cancel the race in 2018 and have scheduled another pig race for the 2019 festival. They just don't seem to care. Please continue to sign and let us pass on the message that entertainment with animals is an abusive business.

On Friday the 26 of July, as entertainment part of the Black Pig Festival, the town of Enniscrone/ Inishcrone/ Inniscrone will play host to a pig race. The Ballina Salmon Festival organisers have cancelled this very same event. There is no need to put these animals into a situation that causes them stress and injury purely for our own "entertainment". We're hoping that with the outrage from the public and statement of the NSPCA, this will be an added incentive for them to make the decision to cancel for the sake of the poor animals.

Please CALL 087 2241881 to contact the Enniscrone Event Committee and express your concern.  You can contact them anonymously, you DO NOT have to provide your name! EVERY phone call helps and hopefully they will realise that animals for entertainment is an abusive business and should not be supported!

These highly intelligent, sensitive animals are also stressed by the constant travel and the large, boisterous crowds. Animals used in travelling acts are almost constantly confined to tiny transport cages or trailers.

The North West SPCA Ballina has posted a statement on their Facebook Page in regards to Pig Races with the following information:
…these are the Internationally agreed Five Freedoms for animal welfare and the basis for a humane attitude and respect towards defenceless animals.
According to this concept, an animal’s primary welfare needs can be met by providing:
• FREEDOM FROM HUNGER AND THIRST
• FREEDOM FROM DISCOMFORT
• FREEDOM FROM PAIN, INJURY OR DISEASE. ...
• FREEDOM TO EXPRESS NORMAL BEHAVIOR. ...
• FREEDOM FROM FEAR AND DISTRESS

We hope that in the future the exploitation of defenceless animals for 'a bit of fun' will be a NON EVENT!

Thank you to those who care, your voice does count!
