The Issue

Every day, the lives of countless children are at risk as they navigate their way to Cleto L. Rodriguez Montessori Elementary. The bustling intersection at West Cesar E. Chavez Blvd, SW 21st Street, and SW 24th Street has become a concerning hub for potential accidents. As a community, we are calling on the San Antonio Department of Transportation, City Council, and the Office of the Mayor to prioritize the safety of our students.

Traffic congestion around school zones is a critical safety issue. Parents regularly report near misses and worrisome traffic conditions that hinder safe passage for their children. It is not just an inconvenience; it is a ticking time bomb that could lead to tragic accidents. The local government has the responsibility and the power to mitigate these risks through strategic planning and immediate action.

The introduction of traffic calming measures like speed humps, pedestrian islands, and enlarged crosswalks can significantly reduce vehicle speeds and increase pedestrian visibility. Additionally, increasing the number of crossing guards during peak school hours will ensure that children and families can cross safely and without fear.

Through these initiatives, not only are we protecting our children, but we are also fostering a community that values safe, healthy, and environmentally friendly practices such as walking or biking to school. This is aligned with San Antonio's commitment to the 'Vision Zero' goal of eliminating all traffic fatalities.

By signing this petition, you are urging our city leaders to take immediate and decisive action. Let us work together to ensure that streets surrounding Cleto L. Rodriguez Montessori Elementary are safe for every child and family. Your signature could be the catalyst for a safer future. Sign and help us make this change today!

Any off campus traffic or safety concerns should be addressed by the campus leadership directly to the mayor and city council representative for that area. On campus concerns should be addressed to the campus principal and Superintendent of schools. Thank you Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters. The above was an email response we received regarding this petition.
