Enhance student safety on UMKC campus

Enhance student safety on UMKC campus
The Issue
A year ago, an alarming incident occurred at UMKC's School of Education building where an armed man robbed a young woman. He threatened her with a weapon, demanding money, which has instilled fear among the student body. In response, the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) enacted temporary security measures, but no true upgrades to the existing security system were made. This concerning oversight has compelled us to establish the SafeSpace Initiative where we are advocating for improved security protocols for all UMKC students.
Our student safety is critical to our academic success and personal well-being. Unfortunately, the current lack of adequate safety measures compromises this. To address this, we strongly urge the UMKC administration to take decisive action by implementing the following:
1. Require ID Access to Campus Buildings: Introduce ID access controls during vulnerable hours, specifically during early morning and late night, to restrict entry to only authorized individuals and deter potential threats.
2. Install Additional Blue Light Emergency Towers: We propose the installation of more blue light emergency towers around campus. A map of all existing blue light towers should be made available, highlighting areas in need of additional coverage to ensure immediate access to emergency services.
3. Enhance Communication of Security Concerns: Improve the communication of security incidents and concerns to students through the UMKC alert system. Prompt and transparent communication is essential to keep the student body informed and prepared.
Enhancing campus safety requires proactive and thoughtful measures. The steps outlined above are not only feasible but are essential to fostering a safe and secure environment for all. By signing this petition, you are voicing a shared commitment to the security and well-being of the UMKC community. Please join us in our campaign urging UMKC to prioritize these safety enhancements and protect its students from future harm.
Sign this petition to make UMKC a safer space for everyone.
