Enhance Safety Measures for Women in India

The Issue

My story is not unique but echoes the experience of countless women in India. Like many others, I grapple with feelings of insecurity every day in my own country. It's difficult to feel safe anymore - be it at our workplaces, homes, or any other public space. It seems our most basic right – to feel safe and free in our own country - is constantly compromised.

This blatant disregard for our safety, our rights, and ultimately, our lives, has led us to question our societal values. It's sickening to realize that in the aftermath of horrific incidents like rape, victims are often blamed and shamed instead of the perpetrators. This behavior encourages us to protect ourselves rather than educating and correcting the behavior of those who cause harm. Is this the society we are a part of? Is this the legacy we wish to pass down to future generations?

It must be noted that in 2016, National Crimes Records Bureau reported 338,954 crimes against women, including over 38,947 rape incidents, up from 34,651 reported in 2015 (Source: National Crime Records Bureau). This statistic alone underscores the urgent need for action to protect women in India.

We urge the government, policymakers, and community leaders to take immediate action to enhance safety measures for women in India and to create a culture that values consent, respect, and dignity for all. We call for these changes because we believe our lives matter. Women are humans. And our basic right to safety should be upheld.
