Enhance road safety in Enniscorthy housing estates
The Issue
My son was hit by a car while riding his bike in our estate, Forgelands, this week. This incident has left us shaken as parents and deeply concerned for the safety of all children in Enniscorthy’s housing estates. It is unacceptable that our communities lack basic infrastructure to protect our children from traffic hazards.
Many housing estates in Enniscorthy are devoid of essential road safety measures such as speed limit signs, speed ramps, and pedestrian crossings. The absence of these critical safety features poses a significant threat to children who play and commute within these estates daily. Without these, vehicles can travel at unsafe speeds, increasing the risk of accidents.
Studies show that the implementation of traffic calming measures, such as speed ramps, can significantly reduce vehicle speeds, leading to a decrease in traffic-related injuries. Research published by the World Health Organization reveals that pedestrian crossings with proper signage can cut the risk of pedestrian injuries and fatalities by nearly 50%.
What we need is every housing estate, including Forgelands, to have speed limit signs prominently displayed, speed ramps strategically placed, and pedestrian crossings for safe bike riding and walking. This infrastructure not only safeguards our children but also promotes a culture of safety within our communities.
We urge the Enniscorthy local council and relevant authorities to prioritize the installation of these lifesaving measures. Ensuring our children’s safety is not just a parental responsibility but a community obligation.
Your support can make a significant difference. By signing this petition, you're advocating for safer living environments for every child in Enniscorthy. Let’s work together to protect our children and prevent future tragedies.
