Enhance public safety to fight catcalling in New York

The Issue

As a minor, I have personally experienced the discomfort and fear that comes with being catcalled on the streets. These instances have made me feel vulnerable, and I can't imagine how it feels with the women in New York. No girl, regardless of her age, should have to endure this form of public harassment. This big problem in New York has gone too far and needs to be dealt with.

Catcalling, a constant issue that afflicts every woman, is not just a harmless compliment but a form of harassment that can leave lasting emotional scars. According to studies conducted by non-profit organizations focused on street harassment, the majority of women have experienced some form of catcalling before the age of 18—a staggering reality that highlights the urgent need for a change in public safety measures.

To address this issue effectively, I want to increase city policies aimed at public safety to reduce the chances of catcalling. City officials need to work closely with local law enforcement and the community to develop educational campaigns that raise awareness about the impacts of catcalling and educate people on respectful behavior.

Additionally, creating designated safe zones in known hotspots of catcalling, increasing police presence during peak times of such incidents, and installing more security cameras can significantly decrease the potential for harassment. We must also ensure that victims feel supported so they don't hesitate to report these incidents without fear. It is time to take action and stand firm against catcalling and public harassment in all its forms.

Join me in changing one of the biggest areas known for catcalling, to do the first step in this change for the better. Sign this petition today and help make the streets a safer place for women of all ages.
