Amplify Children’s Voices: CAFCASS reports need to include family bonds important to child
The Issue
Cafcass reports hold significant influence over court decisions relating to children’s family lives, and it is vital that these reports uphold children’s rights to maintain meaningful bonds with their grandparents. Far too often, when contact with grandparents is suddenly and unjustly severed—sometimes as a means to cause distress within the family—children are left to suffer emotionally and psychologically, with little understanding of why relationships that once brought stability and love have abruptly ended.
Separation and change are already challenging for children; therefore, preserving as much normality as possible, including continued contact with grandparents, is essential for their wellbeing. When children are denied these important relationships without good reason, not only do they risk emotional harm, but they may also become vulnerable to alienation or manipulation, leading them to believe that loved ones no longer care about them.
To prevent such unnecessary suffering, Cafcass must ensure that children’s wishes and feelings regarding contact with grandparents are properly heard and reflected in their reports. This means providing opportunities for children to spend time with their grandparents, even if it is within a contact centre, so that the true nature of these relationships can be observed and understood. By recognising and supporting the child’s right to maintain family bonds, Cafcass can help to minimise disruption, offer reassurance in times of upheaval, and reduce the risks of emotional trauma.
Furthermore, by proactively supporting these connections, the process becomes less adversarial and more focused on the child’s best interests. This approach could reduce the need for lengthy, contentious court proceedings and help prevent the delays that so often leave children in limbo and at risk of further harm.
Ultimately, ensuring that Cafcass reports give proper weight to children’s relationships with their grandparents is not only a matter of fairness, but a crucial step towards safeguarding children’s emotional health and supporting their right to a loving and stable family environment.
