I'm a rising 8th grader currently participating in the Peace Warriors Global Youth program 2025, a community initiative focusing on creating positive local changes. 

In a tragic incident at a nearby school in Los Angeles, a child was tragically run over by a relative who, in their haste to pick up their own child, caused an irreversible tragedy. This incident underscores a glaring issue: the safety of our children during school drop-off and pick-up times needs immediate attention. 

Los Angeles' bustling streets and crowded school zones become especially chaotic during the critical hours of school transportation. The lack of traffic management during these peak times has led to unsafe conditions for our children and community members. Despite the best efforts of school staff and volunteer parents, the absence of designated traffic officers creates a hazardous environment.

We urge the City of Los Angeles to allocate resources to ensure that all school zones have dedicated traffic officers present during drop-off and pick-up times. Traffic officers can help manage the flow of vehicles, ensure adherence to speed limits, and most importantly, secure safe crossing for children and pedestrians. Their presence would not only streamline traffic but drastically reduce the risk of accidents and boost community confidence in the safety of our children.

Other cities have implemented successful programs to place traffic officers in school zones during these peak times, seeing measurable improvements in both traffic flow and pedestrian safety. Los Angeles has an opportunity to follow suit and become a model for other metropolitan areas.

The cost of assigning traffic officers during these crucial times is minimal compared to the potential costs of accidents and the price we pay in terms of our children's safety. Every child deserves to get to and from school safely, and parents should feel at ease knowing their loved ones are protected.
