Enforce stricter laws for teen drunk drivers

Enforce stricter laws for teen drunk drivers
The Issue
On October 4, 2025 my 16-year-old son, Zechariah Turner, was killed by an 18-year-old drunk driver who didn't even have a license. In a baffling twist of injustice, this driver is already out on bond and the authorities are not pursuing severe penalties. This heartbreak is unbearable, and what's worse is that it's an experience shared by too many families across the country. Teen drunk driving is a pervasive issue with devastating consequences, made even worse by the perceived leniency of punishment.
Currently, in many jurisdictions, penalties for teenage drunk drivers, even those causing death, are insufficient. The legal system often treats these incidents as isolated mistakes rather than the gross negligence they truly are. This sends a dangerous message that drunk driving, even if fatal, is something that one can easily walk away from, without facing the full weight of justice.
Statistics show that car crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States, and a large percentage of these involve alcohol use. Adolescents are at a stage where they often underestimate the dangers they face and are prone to risky behaviors. When alcohol is added to this mix, the likelihood of tragic accidents grows exponentially.
To prevent such needless tragedies, we must push for legislative reform. Specifically, we need laws that enforce stricter penalties for teen drunk drivers, including mandatory sentences for those causing injury or death, regardless of whether it's their first offense. This would involve collaboration between state lawmakers, legal experts, and community organizations, all striving towards a common aim: deterrence through accountability.
Creating and enforcing harsher punishments for this reckless behavior will not only provide justice to families devastated by the loss of loved ones but also work as a preventive measure to dissuade teens from drinking and driving in the first place.
We need your support to initiate this essential change. Sign this petition to demand that our lawmakers enforce stricter laws against teen drunk driving, ensuring that justice is served, and future tragedies are prevented. Together, we can urge our legal system to take a firm stand against this preventable menace.
