The Issue
Growing up as a teenager in the 20th century, I have been fortunate enough to never directly encounter a school shooting. Despite this, I've never felt entirely safe within my school's walls, a sentiment shared by many of my peers. The pervasive fear of potential gun violence lingers over us, especially when our school has received threats of shootings.
The ever-increasing number of school shootings in the United States is a profound crisis that demands urgent action. Between 2009 and 2018, there were 288 school shootings in the U.S., compared to just 2 in Canada, 2 in France, 1 in Germany, and 0 in Japan, Australia, and the United Kingdom, according to a CNN report. These statistics are alarming and highlight the dire need for significant reform in our nation's gun policies.
To mitigate the threat of gun violence, I propose the implementation of universal background checks for all firearm purchases. A staggering 22% of gun owners in the U.S. acquired their most recent firearm without any background check whatsoever, based on findings from the Annals of Internal Medicine. This loophole allows unauthorized individuals to easily purchase deadly weapons, and closing it is a critical step towards ensuring public safety.
In addition, the ban on assault weapons must be reinstated. These firearms, designed for rapid-fire military engagement, have no place in civilian settings. Data from the National Institute of Justice reveals that a Federal Assault Weapons Ban was active from 1994 to 2004 and was associated with a 66% reduction in mass shooting casualties during its tenure.
Furthermore, increased funding for gun violence research is essential. By understanding the root causes and patterns of gun violence, policymakers can formulate more effective strategies and interventions to curb this epidemic. Yet, the Dickey Amendment has historically restricted federally funded research into gun violence, stifling progress in this field.
The time for complacency has long passed; action is urgently required. Effective policy change can save lives, protect our schools, and bring peace of mind to students, educators, and families throughout the nation. I urge lawmakers, school administrators, and community leaders to staunchly advocate for stricter gun control measures.
Stand with me to call for universal background checks, banning assault weapons, and funding crucial gun violence research. Sign this petition to be a part of creating a safer future for our children and ourselves.
