Enforce stricter construction safety laws in NYC

Enforce stricter construction safety laws in NYC
The Issue
My fiancé/husband Gregory Echevarria, an Army veteran who served his country with four tours, came home and tragically lost his life on April 13, 2019, while working at a construction site in NYC. This heartbreaking event was due to negligence and several safety violations by his employer, a company with a history of fatalities on their watch. In 2019 alone there was reported 24 deaths in NYC construction field. Even after six long years, the case remains unresolved, open and the company continues to operate, leaving us, as a family, to grapple with this devastating loss, No More Being Silenced.
Had there been stronger safety laws and stringent regulations in place, his death might have been prevented. He was not just a soldier and a husband but also a father, leaving behind a newborn who will never know him, all because of the negligence that continues to plague the construction industry.
Constructions sites are inherently dangerous places, yet too often, warnings and regulations are ignored, leading to tragic and unnecessary loss of life. There must be more rigorous laws in New York City, requiring construction companies to adhere stringently to safety standards. We propose increasing the fines substantially for those companies that fail to comply, ensuring that safety becomes a priority over cost-cutting measures.
Mandatory, frequent safety training and unannounced inspections should be enforced to prevent future accidents. This includes regular re-training for all site workers and supervisors, emphasizing the importance of safety protocols and the dire consequences of neglect.
Furthermore, when a wrongful death occurs, the process for delivering justice should be swift and efficient, offering closure to grieving families. Companies implicated in such tragedies must be held accountable; those found negligent should face closure, and any operating permits or licenses should be immediately revoked.
Join us in calling for these critical changes to protect construction workers and prevent further tragedies. Sign this petition to demand action from our lawmakers and ensure no more families have to endure the heartbreak we live with every day.
