Enforce speed limits in Promontory playground zone
The Issue
The playground zone near Promontory Elementary is supposed to be a safe haven for residents and our children, a place where they can play and commute to and from school without fear. However, speeding has become a rampant issue in this area, posing significant dangers to our kids and the community at large. The speed limit of 30 km/h is crucial for the safety of everyone from dawn until dusk, and yet, it is often ignored. This is a playground zone, not only a school zone.
Unfortunately, we've seen multiple incidents at the crosswalk of Lutz and Sylvan Drive, right outside the 30km zone , where individuals have been struck by vehicles due to drivers failing to adhere to the speed limit. The most recent incident in this area occurred on September 17, 2026, tragically highlighting the urgent need for action to be taken. Our family members, friends, and neighbors are being put at risk every day.
Speeding in school and playground zones is not just a violation of traffic laws; it is a breach of our community's trust and a direct threat to our children's safety. Studies show that a pedestrian hit by a car at 30 km/h has a significantly higher chance of survival than at higher speeds. Adhering to this speed limit could be the difference between life and death.
We ask the local authorities of the City of Chilliwack City and RCMP to take immediate and effective measures to control speeding in this critical zone. This could include increasing police presence during peak hours, photo radar & speeding tickets , implementing traffic-calming measures such as speed bumps, sidewalk guardrails , extending the 30km speed limit before the crosswalk, and installing more visible signage and crosswalk signals to alert drivers of the zone.
