The Issue
Our community in New Wortley, Leeds is under threat from reckless driving on Green Lane and Hall Lane, where drivers routinely ignore the 20MPH speed limit, endangering lives on a daily basis. Over the last few years, there have been numerous accidents, with devastating consequences, including damage to private properties such as gardens, and, tragically, two major incidents involving pedestrians and cyclists in just the past few months.
This issue hits close to home for me, particularly as someone who walks these streets every day, aware of the ever-present risk posed by speeding vehicles. Green Lane and Hall Lane connect critical parts of our community, serving as routes to three local schools and several nurseries. Every day, children, parents, and other community members navigate these dangerous roads, constantly under threat.
The current state is untenable and demands swift and decisive action to ensure the safety of our community. We propose the installation of speed enforcement cameras and the construction of chicanes to effectively reduce vehicle speeds. These measures are vital not only to enforce the speed limit but also to instill a culture of safety and responsibility among drivers passing through our neighbourhood.
Statistical evidence supports the effectiveness of speed cameras and chicanes in reducing accidents and promoting compliance with speed limits. Research by the Department for Transport highlights that speed cameras can reduce fatal and serious accidents by up to 25%, and chicanes can calm traffic effectively, creating safer streets for everyone.
Our children deserve to walk to school without fear of speeding cars; local residents should not be anxious about their safety in their own front yards. It's time for our local authorities to acknowledge this threat and take meaningful action.
Join us in demanding that our local council and the relevant authorities enforce the speed limit on Green Lane and Hall Lane by signing this petition. Your support is crucial in safeguarding our streets and protecting the lives of our community members.
