Enforce San Angelo's Animal Control Policies to Reduce Strays and Shelter Overcrowding
The Issue
I am a devoted animal lover living in San Angelo, TX. It breaks my heart to see the number of stray dogs (and cats) wandering our streets. These animals are not only unchipped but also neglected. This situation could be improved if our city would enforce its existing policies on registering, microchipping, and spay/neutering dogs as stated in the animal control chapter of the code of ordinance.
In 2018 alone, an estimated 6.5 million companion animals entered U.S. animal shelters nationwide - approximately 3.3 million were dogs (ASPCA). In Texas specifically, we have one of the highest rates of stray animals in the country (Texas Tribune). Our local shelters are constantly running at capacity and not able to take in all the dogs that they are being called for. By enforcing these policies effectively in San Angelo, we can reduce these numbers significantly.
Our city has a responsibility to ensure that all pet owners comply with these regulations for their pets' welfare and for public safety reasons as well. Registering pets allows us to keep track of pet populations; microchipping helps lost pets reunite with their owners; spaying/neutering prevents overpopulation and reduces strays.
We urge our local government officials to take immediate action by recognizing and enforcing its policy on registering, microchipping, and spay/neutering dogs more strictly within our community.
Please sign this petition if you believe that every pet deserves a safe home and that it is time for San Angelo to step up its efforts towards responsible pet ownership.
