The Issue

As students of Early Childhood Education at Seneca, we understand the significance of nurturing a child's development during the most formative years. These early years lay the groundwork for a child's future learning and development. Through our hands-on experience, we've witnessed first-hand how crucial play, exploration, and interactive engagement with caring adults are to child development. Sadly, the rising trend of introducing technology and screens at such a young age threatens the natural learning and developmental processes of children under two.

Numerous studies indicate that screen time in early childhood can impede social skills, emotional development, and even concentration abilities later in life. According to the Canadian Paediatric Society, children under two years old should not be exposed to screens at all. This recommendation highlights the need for environments that prioritize personal interactions and traditional play. Yet, in many licensed early learning settings, screens are used, even for infants, as a form of entertainment or distraction.

We are urging the Government of Ontario to implement a policy that prohibits recreational screen time in all licensed child care facilities for children under two years of age. This initiative is essential in creating a supportive, nurturing, and enriching environment where our youngest can thrive and grow in the best conditions possible.

Furthermore, we encourage all families and caregivers to support this initiative by implementing similar no-screen policies at home. By doing so, you reinforce a framework that supports the cognitive and emotional needs of our youngest generation, setting them up for a successful future.

Join us in calling for this critical change. Sign this petition and help us ensure that every child in Ontario receives the attentive, engaging childhood they deserve.
