I know firsthand how devastating it can be to be priced out of your own hometown. Coming from Tampa, FL, a state with no rent regulations. I was pushed out, unable to afford to live where I grew up. I spent years practically homeless couch surfing, using Airbnb, or relying on strangers mutual aid, before getting back on my feet. Here in NYC, I'm see how many people are in the same boat. The lack of rent control in states like Florida allow rents to skyrocket unchecked, leaving many of us scrambling for affordable housing.

       In more liberal states, rent regulations provide a safety net, ensuring that rent increases are kept to a manageable percentage each year. This kind of regulation is essential in stopping landlords from raising rents to astronomical levels that most of us can't keep up with. It's about time that we see these protections implemented nationwide. Housing is a human right, and no one should be forced to leave their home because of wild rent hikes.

     Enforcing nationwide rent control laws would protect millions of residents from being suddenly priced out and displaced. We could provide stability for families that want to stay in their communities without the constant threat of rent-related upheaval. To make this change, we need to raise our voices and challenge the systems in place that are pushing us out.

      Let’s shift the focus from antagonism to advocacy. Remember the government works for us, the people.  Implementing comprehensive rent control laws is a concrete first step toward fairness and protection for renters everywhere.
