I am deeply frustrated by the current political dynamics, particularly the Labour party's attempt to manipulate election outcomes by proposing legislation that would curb large private donations. This seems hypocritical, considering they continue to accept substantial donations from unions, often without consulting the very members whose funds are being used. It feels as though our democratic principles are being undermined, and the voices of hardworking union members are being overlooked.

In many cases, unions decide on political donations without directly consulting their members on which political parties they would like to support. This is not only unfair but also undermines the democratic process within the unions themselves. It's crucial that each union member has a say in where their contributions are going, and that their collective decision genuinely reflects their political preferences.

To address this issue, we demand that all unions be required to conduct a ballot among their members before making any political donations. Members should be asked which political party they want the union to support, and the union should then allocate donations in direct proportion to the preferences indicated by the result of the vote.

Such a practice will ensure transparency and fairness, allowing union members to have a genuine impact on the political landscape. This approach recognises the diversity of political opinions within unions and respects members’ right to have their financial contributions directed in a way that aligns with their values.

Furthermore, this effort could enhance trust in the union's decision-making process and empower members, making them feel more connected and engaged in both their union and the country's future.
