The Issue

Being a member, artist, organizer, and mental health advocate, I have always been passionate about fostering inclusive and supportive environments for individuals, particularly those dealing with mental health challenges. It is with deep disappointment and concern that I bring to attention the troubling culture at the Elements House, part of the NYDIS clubhouse located in Chinatown, which is supposed to be an affirming space for those struggling with mental health issues.

Instead of receiving the support and affirmation these individuals seek, many members have reported experiencing a culture rife with bullying, queer-phobic, sexist, and antisemitic remarks. To make matters worse, reports of sexual harassment, stalking, and even death threats have been met with tepid responses, where perpetrators receive minimal consequences using the guise of disability as an excuse. This toxic environment contradicts not only the mission and core values of a clubhouse but also the guidelines established by Clubhouse International and the laws governing New York State and City.

Despite filing numerous grievances, the board has shown indifference towards these serious matters, continuing to profit from city funds while failing to protect its members. This negligence not only exacerbates the distress already experienced by marginalized individuals but also threatens their safety by allowing a culture of hate and violence to persist unchecked.

To address these urgent concerns, I call upon the NYDIS board, as well as New York City authorities, to mandate comprehensive gender sensitivity training for all staff at the Elements House. This training should enlighten staff about the importance of respecting diverse identities and equip them with the skills necessary to de-escalate potentially volatile situations, fostering a genuinely safe and supportive environment for all members.

Moreover, it is imperative that a transparent mechanism be put in place for reporting and addressing grievances, ensuring accountability and prompt resolution. The board and city officials must monitor compliance with these new policies to restore trust and reassure members that their well-being is the top priority.

I am urging everyone who believes in creating safe and affirming spaces for individuals with mental health struggles to lend their voice and support this petition. By signing, you help create awareness and push for the necessary changes that will ensure the dignity, safety, and respect of every NYDIS clubhouse member. Please join me in making a difference.
