Lola and Charlie, my beloved maltipoos, were much more than just pets – they were a part of our family, community therapy dogs, who brought so much joy and comfort to everyone who met them. One tragic day while on our standard walk, Lola and Charlie were brutally attacked by unleashed dogs, owned by a negligent and drunk individual. Lola didn’t survive, Charlie continues to bear physical and emotional scars, and our family is left with an unfathomable heartache and haunting visuals of the incident.

However, there are virtually no legal repercussions against the owner whose irresponsibility led to this horrifying incident, a shortfall in our legal system that must be addressed. It is time we call for a legal framework that holds dog owners criminally liable for fatal dog-on-dog attacks resulting from their negligence.

Every year, there are countless innocent lives lost through similar preventable incidents, with no justice served. According to reports from animal charities, the number of dog-on-dog attacks has been on the rise, causing tragic loss and trauma to families who treated their dogs as family members (Animal People, 2018).

This is not just about Lola and Charlie. This is about every pet that has been brutally killed in such attacks. This is about every grieving pet-owner who has had to endure the loss, the mourning, and the helplessness of witnessing the death of their dearly loved companions, all because of another's carelessness.
