The Issue

My brother Jacob Constance tragically lost his life, leaving behind four children, due to a preventable accident. A simple moment of inattention—a failure to look twice before pulling onto the road—led to a devastating loss for our family and a lifetime of heartache for his children. This tragedy underscores the critical importance of road safety awareness and the need for preventive measures to ensure no family endures this kind of heartbreak.

South Carolina currently does not mandate helmet usage for all ages, leaving riders, particularly vulnerable younger drivers, at significant risk. Helmets are proven to reduce the severity of injuries in accidents, potentially saving lives. Implementing mandatory helmet laws will create a safer environment for motorcyclists across our state and protect our loved ones.

Moreover, education is a key component in preventing road accidents. "Look Twice, Save a Life" should be more than a slogan; it must be a comprehensive educational campaign designed to instill safe driving habits from a young age. By incorporating such programs into school curricula, we can raise awareness among children, cultivating a culture of safety and responsibility that they will carry into adulthood.

Additionally, grass clippings on roadways, often ignored, can create hazardous conditions for motorists, especially motorcyclists. Educating the public about proper lawn maintenance and legislating against blowing grass onto roads can greatly reduce this type of preventable accident.

Sign this petition to urge South Carolina lawmakers to introduce and enforce helmet laws, implement road safety education in schools, and spread awareness about keeping roads clear from grass clippings. Together, we can advocate for a safer South Carolina, ensuring that no other family has to endure the loss we have suffered.
