Enforce Fixed Subscription Pricing and Protect Ad Blocker Usage
Enforce Fixed Subscription Pricing and Protect Ad Blocker Usage
The Issue
As someone who is consistently facing the economic challenges of inflating subscription prices, I find myself in a dismayed and frustrated state. It seems that, every other month, the prices of everything, including essential online services, are going up, whilst our earnings stay stagnant. This struggle isn't solely mine; millions around the globe share the same sentiment.
Hence, we believe there should be a law stipulating that if someone signs up for a subscription at a fixed price, it should remain that price for life until the subscription is cancelled. This is not an unfounded demand, as existing precedents like the Rent Control Acts of various countries already safeguard tenant rights by fixing rental costs.
Further, there is a misconduct of artificially inflating prices on existing subscription plans and then introducing a new plan with reduced benefits at the original price. This is a surreptitious practice of economic exploitation that we believe should be made illegal.
Another issue that amplifies our concerns is that of 'ad blocking'. Companies are increasingly blocking ad blockers which defy our rights as end consumers. Ads add to the clutter, creating an intrusive browsing experience, and in some cases, even infringe privacy. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that using ad blockers is recognized as a legitimate right of internet users especially as it has been proven time and time again that ad providers like Google cannot actively police their advertising to keep scams and other inappropriate ads from being shown to users. The FBI also advises all internet users to use adblockers for this exact reason.
The ever-escalating pressure of unreasonable price hikes, dubious subscription schemes, and the right to ad-free surfing deserve legal attention. We, the common public, demand equity and transparency in our digital consumption. Sign this petition to make our voices heard, and encourage a fairer digital economy.
