Enforce animal protection laws in Romania
El problema
Footage from a hidden camera show the brutal killing of dogs in one of many kill shelters in Romania.
We urge the Romanian government and European Union institutions to take urgent and decisive action to ensure the enforcement of existing animal protection laws. The inhumane treatment of homeless dogs in shelters across Romania is a pressing issue that cannot be ignored any longer. Despite regulations designed to protect these animals, reports of brutality, neglect, and corruption persist. It's time to raise the standards and hold those responsible accountable.
Homeless dogs in Romania face a cruel reality. Many dogs are subjected to violence and harsh conditions instead of receiving the care and compassion they deserve. Shelters often fail to provide basic necessities such as food, clean water, and suitable living spaces. Cases of brutal killing methods physical harm highlight severe breaches in animal welfare standards.
Equally concerning is the lack of transparency and oversight in these facilities. Corrupt practices obstruct justice and allow the mistreatment of animals to continue unchecked. Shelter operations must be subjected to regular audits by independent bodies to ensure compliance with animal welfare laws.
Our goal is to see Romania implement a zero-tolerance policy towards brutality and corruption in animal shelters. The government must establish a framework for accountability where shelter staff and management face penalties for failing to meet legal standards of care. Additionally, public access to shelter performance records should be mandated, encouraging community involvement and oversight.
Furthermore, the European Union should play an active role in monitoring compliance with animal protection directives, providing support and resources for Romania to enhance its enforcement capabilities.
Catch–Neuter–Release (CNR) programs are the most humane and dog-friendly approach to sustainably reducing stray dog overpopulation. By preventing reproduction rather than eliminating animals, these programs address the root cause of the problem while aligning with modern animal welfare standards
By demonstrating strong moral leadership and commitment to animal welfare, we can make a significant difference in the lives of homeless dogs. Join us in this cause to protect the voiceless and ensure that homeless dogs in Romania are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
