Enforce Animal Protection Laws Equally for Hoffman's Animal Control
The Issue
Like many people, I believe that dogs have a right to life. Stories I have heard about Hoffman's Animal Control in Pennsylvania deeply upsets me. This institution is known for holding animals in awful conditions, often euthanizing them within 24 hours of catching them, particularly specific breeds. All the while they proclaim themselves a no-kill shelter! Such dishonesty not only betrays public trust but robs these helpless animals of their chance at finding a loving home.
Pennsylvania has strict animal cruelty laws that we citizens are expected to abide by. Yet, it seems that Hoffman's Animal Control is exempt. Why should they not be held accountable in the same way we are? Holding period laws are state requirements that determine how long an impounded animal must be “held” before it is able to be released or euthanized. Typically, these laws give owners anywhere between three and ten days to redeem the animal before the animal can be placed for adoption, sold, or euthanized. The majority of states require a holding period of three to five days. In all of the states with holding laws, the decision of what happens to the animal after the holding period has passed is left solely up to the animal shelter or organization that has impounded the animal. This law is regularly dismissed by Hoffman's as they often euthanize dogs on the same day of capture. Their deplorable actions make it clear to me that either Hoffman's Animal Control needs to be shut down, or at least, be forced to adhere strictly to our state laws. In Pennsylvania, the holding period for impounded animals depends on whether the animal is a stray or has been attacked: Stray dogs without ID tags are held for two days, while dogs with ID tags or microchips are held for five business days after a certified letter is sent to the owner.
Dangerous dogs
Dogs that bite or attack a person are held for a minimum of ten days to determine the medical results. The owner or keeper is responsible for the costs of detaining and isolating the dog.
Abandoned animals
An animal can be released to the owner or their representative within 48 hours of being abandoned. The owner is responsible for any room and board charges during the abandonment period. Hoffman's does not follow any of these laws. It doesn't matter if the dog is friendly & has an owner they typically euthanize them as quickly as possible especially if they can't get a hold of the owner after the first try of calling them. Doesn't matter if theyre at work & or busy with their children & just simply missed their phone ringing. If it's a pit bull, cane Corso, and type of bully breed they want them killed right away & this is wrong on so many levels!!!
Statistics show that unadopted pets can live happily in shelters for years before finding a home. We need to give these dogs a chance. It is our responsibility, and the time is now. Please sign this petition to protect our furry friends and demand that Hoffman's Animal Control follows our animal protection laws like every other Pennsylvania citizen. Thank you.
