At 2:00 A.M. Sunday, March 13, the majority of us in the United States set our clocks forward one hour, in accordance with Daylight Saving Time. This outdated tradition not only caused us to lose an hour of precious sleep throwing our biological clocks into chaos, but it has also been shown to cause a significant increase in energy consumption. This equates to higher energy costs for consumers and an increase in carbon emissions.

A key measurable example of the detrimental effects of Daylight Saving Time occurred in the state of Indiana when they adopted the practice in 2006. Researchers discovered that Daylight Saving Time increased electricity consumption by 1% overall, with a 2-4% increase in the summer and fall months. The additional power usage cost Indiana power users $9 million a year and significantly increased pollution. Researchers believe that this increase in electricity consumption could be a result of an increased demand for cooling in the evening.

We at American Power & Gas need your help to petition lawmakers to permanently eliminate Daylight Savings Time. We have been on the forefront in providing green energy solutions to our customers and see an opportunity to reduce our nation’s energy consumption further by abolishing Daylight Saving Time. Nationally reducing energy consumption, which means lower energy costs for consumers and benefits our environment by reducing carbon emissions.

According to a 2014 national telephone study performed by Rasmussen Reports, only 33% of Americans think Daylight Saving Time is worth the hassle. This number is down significantly from previous years, as many Americans are growing tired of the archaic time adjustment. The practice was first introduced to the United States in 1918 by President Woodrow Wilson and was intended to conserve resources during World War I. However, a growing number of studies and experts have concluded that this is no longer the case.

Dr. Matthew Kotchen, a professor of economics at Yale University and former deputy assistant secretary for environment and energy at the U.S. Department of Treasury penned an opinion piece on Daylight Savings Time that was featured in the New York Times in 2014. According to Kotchen, “As the debate continues this year, readers and policy makers should keep in mind that despite its intended effect, a growing body of evidence reveals that daylight saving time increases rather than decreases energy consumption.”

Additionally, a study by the University of California-Santa Barbara found that Daylight Saving Time does not reduce energy consumption, it might increase it.
