Endorse a 4 LANE Iris Ave WITH PROTECTED BIKE LANES.

The Issue

(May 2024)

The City of Boulder unveiled 4 design options for Iris Ave.

Design C and D achieve a higher level of safety for cyclists without requiring Iris Ave to be reduced from 4 lanes down to 2 lanes.

  1. Design C and Design D both have much needed protected bike lanes.
  2. Design C and Design D both have all 4 lanes remaining which is essential to commuters into Boulder and for evacuations.
  3. Design C and D are not complete, there are many details to work out, yet in principle they achieve the greatest common goal for all, 4 lanes and protected bike lanes. Let's all work together to make these designs as refined as they can be to serve all of Boulder.

Iris Ave is not simply an arterial road and should not be treated as such- it's a road that all surrounding cities and towns use and rely on. It is a door into Boulder

Designs C and D take into account all stakeholders:

  • Cyclists
  • Pedestrians
  • School children
  • Neighborhood integrity
  • Evacuations
  • the 63,000 commuters
  • Business owners
  • and the future 25% of Coloradians that will use 119 to Iris to commute into work every day.

Designs C and D should be the Gold Standard for safety and satisfying all of the stakeholders in Boulder. They are designs to celebrate and advocate for.
