END "Zero Tolerance" vehicle seizures in ILLINOIS.
The Issue
End "Zero Tolerance" vehicle seizures during traffic stops. Call or Visit Representative William Davis (D) - General Assembly (96th)1912 W. 174th Street East Hazel Crest, IL 60429 phone number (708) 799-7300
Springfield Office: 246-W Stratton Office Building. Springfield, IL 62706 phone number (217) 782-8197
On July 9th 2022 I was at Illinois Secretary of State to renew my license plates. I knew I needed insurance but I didn't know if I needed S.R 22 or Liability.
I was told at Secretary of State my license plate was suspended. I went to my vehicle and called to make sure which insurance I needed. I had the money to get insurance over the phone and to renew my license plates. Because the operator said my wait time was 18 minutes I decided to drive home until someone answered. When I came out the Markham police were sitting at the entrance. There is only one road in and out so you have no choice but to pass the officer. This is a traffic TRAP.
I was pulled over and my vehicle was seized. I am a single mother of three unemployed college student who graduated May 14th 2022. I had a job interview later that afternoon that I was unable to make.
I explained to the Officer that I was on the car phone with the Secretary of State attempting to get the correct insurance and pay to renew my plates. I asked for a supervisor. The supervisor came and told me to take personal responsibility for my car being seized. I said that is why I am here to take responsibility and you are taking my vehicle rendering me unable to obtain employment to take care of myself, my family, and to pay the state of Illinois their driving taxes.
The Supervising Officer replied "Zero Tolerance". Mind you we are in a pandemic many people are still unemployed or underemployed. Furthermore, the war between Russia and Ukraine has greatly increased the cost of gas and food. The supervising officer sarcastically said if you don't like "Zero Tolerance" then let your state representative know.
So here is the first step Please sign this petition to End "Zero Tolerance" of vehicle seizures during traffic stops in Illinois. By signing this petition We the People of Illinois stop traffic traps and poor families from loosing a critical asset.
The Zero Tolerance policy disproportionately hurts Black, BIPOC, and elderly persons. This policy renders many heads of household unable to safely and securely obtain and maintain employment. Leaving thousands of Illinois families in poverty. Sign the petition and call your state of Illinois Representative including State Representative William Davis. #EndZeroTolerance
Thank You
