End Unfair Suspensions & Exclusions for SEN Kids - Dfe to reform with protected policies

The Issue

Every child deserves equal opportunities to learn and grow, regardless of their abilities.

Yet, for too many Special Educational Needs (SEN) children in Academy schools, both with and without Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans, this fundamental right is being compromised.

Outdated and discriminatory behaviour policies are leading to an alarming rate of suspensions and exclusions, jeopardising the future of these vulnerable children.

We cannot sit idly by while this injustice continues. Join us in demanding a change to Academy schools' behaviour policies, ensuring that they cater to the unique needs of SEN children and stop these unfair suspensions and exclusions.

The Problem:

Research has shown that SEN children in Academy schools face a disproportionate risk of suspension and exclusion compared to their peers.

This is primarily due to behaviour policies that fail to account for the unique challenges that SEN children face, such as difficulty in communication, emotional regulation, and sensory processing.

These exclusions not only deny SEN children the education they deserve but also reinforce the stigma and discrimination that they already face in society.

Parents are often faced with only a choice of legal bills they are unable to afford, alternative school refusals and all too often biased school Governor boards who are not impartial when parents seek a review.

The system is broken.
The children are suffering.
The future is bleak.

The Solution:

Together, we can advocate for the following changes to Academy schools' behaviour policies:

Greater Awareness and Training: Educate teachers and staff on the unique challenges faced by SEN children, empowering them to provide appropriate support and accommodations.

Individualised Behaviour Plans: Develop tailored behaviour plans for SEN children, considering their specific needs, strengths, and challenges with or without an EHCP and engage with parents to succeed.

Collaborative Approaches: Encourage proactive communication between schools, parents, and relevant professionals to better understand each SEN child's needs and create a more inclusive learning environment.

Alternative Disciplinary Measures: Implement alternative disciplinary measures that focus on teaching appropriate behaviours and coping strategies, rather than punitive actions.

Transparent Monitoring: Establish a transparent system to monitor and report suspensions and exclusions, ensuring that Academy schools are held accountable for their actions.

By signing this petition, you are lending your voice to a cause that has the power to transform the lives of countless SEN children. Your support will help to create a future where every child is treated fairly and given an equal chance to succeed.

Share this petition with your friends and family, and together, let's make a positive impact on the lives of SEN children in Academy schools. It's time for a behaviour policy revolution!
