End unfair street sweeping fines in Pomona, CA

The Issue

For over 30 years, I've lived in my home here in Pomona, CA, and during all this time, street sweeping was non-existent and parking on the street was customary. It's only recently that an every-other-Friday street sweeping schedule was introduced, which came as a surprise to many residents, nobody petitioned for it. Alongside this change, hefty fines of $60 for parking in the street on sweeping days have been imposed, affecting many residents who, like myself, often park on the street due to lack of alternative parking solutions.

Our streets look no different than they did before this sweeping program began, which raises the question: Why the sudden need for street sweeping if it doesn't visibly improve our street conditions? This seems like an unwarranted burden on the community, particularly during these financially trying times when many cannot afford unexpected expenses like costly fines.

Moreover, this unexpected street sweeping schedule and the associated penalties have not allowed adequate time for residents to adjust, causing confusion and financial strain. Unlike areas that have consistently had street cleaning, Pomona residents are being thrown off by this sudden requirement that goes against decades of regular practice. The implementation lacks clear communication and consideration for those affected.

I urge the Pomona City Council to either end the street sweeping program, which doesn't evidently improve our living environment, or to eliminate the steep fines imposed on innocent residents for merely following the decades-long tradition of parking on the street. The program's practical benefits seem non-existent, making it an unjustified financial burden unfairly placed on the shoulders of everyday citizens.

Sign this petition to call for the cessation of unnecessary financial burdens through abrupt policy changes. Let's raise our voices and show that residents of Pomona deserve fair and reasonable treatment. It’s time for our streets to reflect both our needs and our years of established parking practices.

Street sweeping was initiated Citywide in response to literally dozens of complaints from residents, contrary to what the petition proponent states. As he correctly indicates, residents only need move their vehicles twice monthly for a four-hour period. Further, unlike other cities where street parking is prohibited in entire neighborhoods on street sweeping days, Pomona instituted a program where opposite sides of each street are swept on different days, meaning residents only need move their vehicles across the street, not several blocks away.
