End Transport Exclusion for Dog Owners: Introduce Pet-Friendly Train Carriages
The issue
For years, I have worked to build stronger, more connected communities through our dogs. Time and again, I have seen the same heartbreaking reality: people being excluded from community life simply because they don't own a car.
For many Sydneysiders, owning a dog should never mean being cut off from their city. Yet under current rules, countless people are unable to legally travel with their dog to a local park, attend a community event, visit family or friends, access training classes, or even reach a veterinary clinic without relying on expensive alternatives or the generosity of others.
This isn't simply about pets. It's about inclusion, accessibility and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to participate in community life.
Around the world, cities including London, New York and many across Europe successfully allow dogs on public transport every day. Their experience has shown that, with sensible guidelines, dogs and public transport can coexist safely and respectfully.
Sydney has the opportunity to adopt a balanced approach that works for everyone.
We are calling on the NSW Government to introduce dedicated pet-friendly carriages on every train service as part of a two-year trial. Clearly identified carriages, supported by practical conditions such as dogs remaining on leads or in suitable carriers, would provide a safe and predictable environment for pet owners while respecting the comfort of other passengers.
This simple change would:
❤️ Reduce social isolation for people without access to a car.
🐾 Improve access to parks, veterinary care, training and community events.
🚊Encourage greater use of public transport.
🏃♀️Support healthier, more connected communities.
🌏Bring Sydney into line with many leading cities around the world.
✍️Every signature sends a clear message that Australians want a transport system that reflects modern lifestyles and supports community inclusion.
