The issue

Shakespeare Street residents and others in the surrounding community of Mount Hawthorn, particularly our children and pets, frequently visit and utilize Shakespeare Street Park. It's their place to play, explore, and unwind. However, there is a growing concern among us due to the continued use of glyphosate-based weed killers in maintaining the park.

Glyphosate, widely known for its application in agricultural weed control, has been at the center of numerous health debates and environmental discussions. Various studies have linked its usage to potential health risks, including cancer and other serious conditions. For our small yet tight-knit community, the constant exposure to such chemicals is not a matter we can ignore. Our children and pets deserve to enjoy a safe and chemical-free environment in the places they love, play, and grow.

Moreover, recent underground power works on Shakespeare Street have left the verge in need of restoring and updating. It's the perfect opportunity to enhance our park with a beautiful and native verge garden. We propose that the City of Vincent assist in planting this garden and continue with standard park maintenance practices like mulch replacement, gravel laying, and lawn mowing.

To support this change, we are willing to work hand-in-hand with local authorities. As residents, we commit to manual weed removal during bi-annual busy bee events organised either by the City or among us. This community effort not only shows our dedication to a healthier environment but also strengthens our bond with the park and amongst ourselves.

We ask for the City of Vincent's immediate assistance in eliminating the use of glyphosate in our beloved Shakespeare Street Park, supporting the establishment of a native garden, and ensuring regular park maintenance. Let’s create a non-toxic, beautiful, and sustainable green space for our families and future generations.

Please join us in signing this petition to express our collective voice for a safer and more beautiful Shakespeare Street Park.
