Every day, as a dedicated wildlife rescuer, I find myself racing against time to save innocent animals trapped in the deadly confines of barbed wire fencing around paddocks. The heart-wrenching cries of pain and fear from these helpless creatures as they die slowly from painful dehydration or are being eaten by predators whilst trapped on fence is a call for our immediate attention and action.

Barbed wire, while useful for keeping livestock in agricultural settings, poses a significant threat to wildlife. Animals such as birds, gliders, bats , kangaroos, and other native species often find themselves ensnared in the sharp, unforgiving spikes, leading to severe injuries, prolonged suffering, and usually death. According to wildlife protection organizations, thousands of animals suffer and perish every year due to this archaic method of fencing.

There are viable alternatives available. Modern fencing solutions such as high-tensile smooth wire, electric fences, or wildlife-friendly options significantly reduce the risk of harm to wildlife. These alternatives not only protect our wildlife but are also cost-effective and durable, ensuring farm security without endangering innocent animals.

Implementing a shift from barbed to wildlife-friendly fencing protects not only our precious fauna but also supports the broader ecological balance. It is a step towards more humane and responsible farming practices that respect and preserve our biodiversity.
