The Issue

In recent years, there has been increasing evidence and growing public concern regarding the use of animals in travelling circuses. These majestic creatures, both wild and domesticated, are often kept in confined spaces for extended periods, transported frequently under conditions that severely limit their movement, and forced to endure environments that are entirely unnatural to their being. Disturbingly, it has been documented that many of these animals exhibit stress-related behaviours such as repetitive pacing, a clear sign of distress and unmet needs.

Animals have complex physical and psychological requirements which are impossible to fulfill in the constraints of a travelling circus. Their well-being is compromised as their lives are reduced to mere spectacles for entertainment, depriving them of the ability to engage in natural behaviours or experience the richness of their native habitats.

Globally, the tides are turning, and many countries have recognised the inherent cruelty associated with using animals in circuses. Progressive nations have introduced restrictions or outright bans, acknowledging that animals deserve respect and proper care which simply cannot be provided in these conditions.

In South Africa, the need for change is urgent. As a nation known for its rich biodiversity and natural beauty, allowing animals to be subjected to cruelty for entertainment contradicts our ethical responsibilities toward animal welfare. It is time for South Africa to join the growing list of countries banning the use of animals in circuses and lead the way in promoting compassion.

By signing this petition, you are lending your voice to a cause that seeks justice and dignity for these animals. Your support will advocate for the much-needed policy changes to prevent further exploitation of these vulnerable creatures. Let us stand together and call for an end to the use of animals in travelling circuses in South Africa. Please sign this petition to make a difference.
