End the Unfair Ban on Cell Phones and Smart Watches in Our Public Schools
The Issue
As a student, I've seen firsthand how the decision to ban all cell phones and smart watches in our schools is causing more harm than good. Many teachers share my concern. The issue extends beyond merely being able to use these devices during class time. This rule also applies to our break time, lunch, and even the halls. High schoolers who drive or have jobs that require them to get in contact with employers have been particularly disadvantaged. A blanket ban on these essential communication tools disregards the nuances of our lives and how critically we depend on them.
It has been found that while unrestricted phone use can interfere with learning, strategic use of technology can enhance educational experiences (Researchers at the University of Michigan, 2018). Many schools around the globe have adapted to this by implementing policies that allow limited use; these have proven to be an effective middle ground. By allowing controlled use of cell phones and smart watches in our schools, we ensure that we are not hindering the legitimate communication needs of students.
The need for balance between learning and personal demands is of prime importance. This blanket ban, far from being a solution, is eroding that balance. We need to revisit this restrictive policy and find a flexible, reasonable solution that respects everyone's needs. We strongly urge the education board to reassess the ban on cell phones and smart watches in our public schools. Please, sign this petition to help our voices be heard.
